Community residents Attitudes and Attentions to Embedded Urban Community Comprehensive Old-age Service Facility Design for the Elderly: A Mixed Methods Study
Abstract: Chinese government is encouraging older persons ageing in home and community. A series of Embedded Urban Community Comprehensive Old-age Service Facilities(COSF) has been proposed and designed in many urban communities by private capitals. Despite the COSF for the older persons living in home and community have positive effects, however, according to the news, resistance from the community residents always appears in the process of project establishment and construction of COSF from the perspective of architectural planning and design, this study aimed initiatively to explore and explain the attitudes and attentions of residents of all ages to the design of COSF. An integrative mixed methods approach which quantitative phase informed the development of qualitative phase was used. In quantitative phase, 436 residents (valid number 380 copies) in Harbin were asked to complete the questionnaire to explore whether they were supportive or opposed to the design of COSF in 2017. In the qualitative phase, based on the results of the questionnaire, 32 participants were selected to participate in six focus-group discussions. The study concluded that, only 12.9% of residents resisted the design of COSF.
There were seven aspects influenced residents attitudes, including the quality of the service, condition of environmental health, safety, emotional impact, support social relationship, property value impart and use of spatial resource. And the residents concerns for the design of COSF included site selection, entrance and exit location, open space layout, construction scale, and quality of facilities

Background
Due to the growth of the aging population and governments policy orientation, the elderly service industry has to become socialization in China, so that like many developed and developing countries ageing in community has become an important measure for active aging. In recent years, 'Embedded retirement pattern' and ' Embedded old-age service facilities' have been established to realize' long care and ' ageing in place'. However, in China, most of the urban communities are for all ages with limited public resources, the construction and usage of community facilities should potentially meet the needs of all residents, hence, the design and build of Embedded Urban Community Comprehensive Old-age Service Facilities(COSF)are complicated. Regarding the social news in the past three years, some emphasized the community resistance to the development of COSF. Therefore, the design and build of COSF are not only an architectural issue, but also a complex social issue. In view of this, it is particularly important to understand and explore community residentsrsquo; attitudes and attentions to COSF.
Sense of community and social inclusion.
The term 'sense of community' is mainly derived from sociology and psychology. It emphasizes that because of mutual interaction, residents have a sense of belonging with the community and can participate in community activities consciously. Sense of community can improve residents satisfaction with the community and the degree of interaction among residents. The term 'social inclusion' is mainly derived from sociology and social design. Its main purpose is to help vulnerable groups to actively integrate into wider society. Distinguished from social exclusion, social inclusion emphasizes strengthening the social participation, friendship, environmental conditions and reducing conflict in different dimensions of daily life. Social inclusion can also be understood as social integration, which emphasizes all members of society can participate in and share social resources in positive, equal, and meaningful manner. The community, their satisfaction, and participation attention to residents willingness of living in certain. In this research, the propose of social inclusion is mainly from the perspective of architectural design and social design, emphasizing that design must be reachable and practical for everyone in the community, not just to meet the needs of the minority.
