摘 要

李子柒因其视频中满满的中国元素而在海内外走红，尽管视频在You Tube 订阅量超过922万，但除粉丝自行翻译的字幕外，视频并无官方英文字幕，此时，如何添加准确的英文字幕迫在眉睫。

胡庚申教授提出的生态翻译学理论，特别是基于语言维、文化维、交流维的三维转化原理则为李子柒视频字幕翻译提供了良好的理论支撑。生态翻译学理论将翻译被定义为“译者适应选择翻译生态环境的活动”，不同于以往的“译语中心”和“源语中心”，该理论提出了“译者中心”全新视角，并创造性地回答了“什么是翻译”“谁翻译”“怎样翻译”和“为什么翻译”的问题^[1]。基于此，本文选取李子柒其中五个视频的英文字幕翻译作为研究对象，从三维转化原理角度分析字幕翻译中存在的优点与不足，举例说明并提出相应改进意见。

本文的主要结论有三：一是随着跨文化交流的日益频繁，视频字幕的添加必不可少；二是李子柒视频现存字幕翻译有出彩，也有不足之处，但总体来说有利于跨文化间的交流学习；三是胡庚申教授提出的生态翻译学理论，特别是三维转化原理为李子柒视频字幕翻译提供了良好的理论支撑，同时在翻译领域也有着广阔的运用前景。

Abstract

Featuring Chinese elements，the videos of Li Ziqi have aroused wide concern at home and abroad. Despite enjoying 9.22million subscribers on You Tube, official English subtitling is still missing on the original videos. In this context, whether and how to accurately conduct CE translation is on the agenda.

Inspired by Professor Hu Gengshen’s Eco-translatology, combined with the three dimensional formation, the subtitles can be polished. To be exact, it can be defined as an ecological approach to translation studies or translation studies from an ecological perspective, interpreting translation as “a kind of selective activity of translators’ adaptation to fit the translational eco-environment”^[2]. What’s more, 'translator-centredness' offers a completely new perspective, which is definitely different from the traditional ‘source text-centered' and 'target text-centered'. Generally speaking, it gives the answers to these questions: “what’s-translation” “who-translate” “how-to-translate” and “why-translate” and deserves extensive attention. In this thesis, five episodes are selected and summarized the merits and defects in terms of the linguistic, social and cultural dimensions, and corresponding suggestions for improvement are illustrated with examples.

There are three main conclusions in this thesis: firstly, with the increasing of cross-cultural communication, the subtitle is essential for videos; Secondly, despite the defects, the subtitling in Li Qiqi’s videos is conducive to cross-cultural communication. Thirdly, Eco-translatology proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen, especially the Three Dimensional Transformation, provides a delicate theoretical support for subtitling in Li Ziqi’s videos, and has a promising future in translation.

On the English Subtitling of Li Ziqi's Videos

1 Introduction

1.1Research background

Li Ziqi, a young vlogger telling story of China in picturesque videos, is followed by 21 million people on Sina Weibo and 9.22 million on YouTube. She is internationally acclaimed for the unique, simple and traditional Chinese way of life. Focusing on Chinese cuisine culture, her videos covers the quiet old country life, detailed cooking processes, dedicate Chinese dresses and also melodious ancient tune. The release of her videos on YouTube not only brings her handsome fans but also puts her to a dilemma considering culture shock. In this context, whether and how to accurately translate subtitles into English is on the agenda.

In 2008, Dr.Hu Gengshen put forward the theory of “Eco-translatology”, interpreting translation as “a kind of selective activity of translators’ adaptation to fit the translational eco-environment”. The “Three Dimensional Transformation”: linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension fits the “translation as adaptation and selection”^[3], undoubtedly will set a good example in translation.

Applying the theory into the English translation of Li Ziqi’s videos, it is bound to function well in cross-cultural communication. With accurate English subtitles and better understandings, not only the videos will be better understood but also the traditional culture value like moderation, generosity, kinship, optimism etc. will be conveyed.

1.2 Research purpose and significance

The release of Li Ziqi’s videos on YouTube not only brings her a considerable hit but also puts her to a dilemma considering lacking of the official English subtitles and the culture shock. Actually, the existing subtitles are added by the audiences in the barrage, some of which are not accurate and even wrong. In this context, how to deal with the subtitles is on the agenda. Inspired by Professor Hu Gengshen’s Eco-translatology, combined with the three dimensional formation: linguistic dimension, cultural dimension and communicative dimension, this thesis aims to provide a more precise and delicate English subtitle.

With accurate English subtitles and better understandings, the audiences can really enjoy the quiet old country lives, detailed cooking processes, dedicate Chinese dresses and also melodious ancient tune through the videos. What’s more, the traditional culture value like moderation, generosity, kinship, optimism etc. will be conveyed. Besides, refined translation subtitles will contribute to the prosperous of the Eco-translatology and give a superb example for cross-cultural communication.

1.3 Lay out of the thesis

The thesis can be divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction, which briefly expounds the background, purpose, significance and lay out of the topic. The second part is the theoretical framework, including brief review of the relevant literature at home and abroad about English subtitling and Eco-translatology, and the practice of the theory. The third part is analysis of subtitling of videos. The backgrounds, merits and defects of the subtitling in terms of Three Dimension Transformation and a brief summary are elaborated. The fourth part is the conclusion, containing major findings, limitations and implications.
