1. 研究目的与意义(文献综述)
This paper mainly studies the translating methods applied in the translating process of Kungfu Movements in Chinese martial art fiction. Chinese traditional Martial art fictions started in the Qin and Han Dynasty, created to encourage the righteousness and courageousness, through describing heroes who eliminate the bullies and help the down-trodden and fight against the upper class. As the development of this genre, in 20th century, Liang Yusheng and Jin Yong explored the new methods of creating martial art fictions with modern elements and started a new period of New Wuxia (a new system of creation in the martial art fictions). During this period, Jin Yong became famous in Chinese readers all over the world and made the greatest achievement in martial art fictions among the contemporary writers. Meanwhile, due to the introduction in 1960s, the western world became interested in the works with the theme of Wuxia and in 1990s a series of scholars began to translate Chinese martial art fictions into English versions officially(魏天霞,2011) and more and more Wuxia fans translate other Chinese martial art fictions on the Internet. As a result, relevant studies about the translating methods and other issues appeared successively and this field attracts more and more attention in the academic circle.
Studies of the translating issues of Chinese martial art fictions can be divided into three different categories. First, some scholars study the translation of certain part of the fiction in the English versions, such as certain terms, dialogues and names of characters. Shi Yunlai focused on the culture-loaded terms of Chinese martial art fictions and take Olivia Mok’s version of Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain as a case to summarize the some translating strategies in the English translation version(史云来,2012). Teng Xiong collected all the weapon names in The Book amp; the Sword and their corresponding translated terms and then divided them into three categories to conclude the translating methods(滕雄,2007). Second, under some certain translation theory, the finished English versions of Chinese martial art fictions have been analyzed. Tang Linlin analyzed The Book amp; The Sword, Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain and The Deer and The Cauldron from the perspective of the Skopos Theory, especially tried to find suitable methods of translating names and nicknames which frequently appear in Chinese martial art fictions and hold rich cultural connotations(汤琳琳,2011). Third, comprehensive research on the developing process of translating Chinese martial art fictions as well as its methodology study made some achievements. Xiao Qiang listed all published and online English versions of Chinese martial art fictions and compared the research status of Chinese mainland and the region of Chinese Hong Kong and Taiwan(肖强,2011).
To conclude, studies on translating methods of Chinese martial art fictions is not enough, especially in Chinese mainland. Kungfu movements, as the embodiment of Wuxia spirit, illuminate abundant Chinese cultural meaning and need careful treatment in the process of translating. This paper will study the methods of translating Kungfu movements carefully, aiming to summarize the translating methods of all aspects of Kungfu movements in Chinese martial art fictions.
