Alice Walker(born February 9, 1944) is an American author and activist. She wrote the critically acclaimed novel The Color Purple(1982) for which she won the National Book Awarded Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Since its publication, purple has received a lot of attention and discussion at home and abroad. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to this work in China. The research on The Color Purple by foreign scholars mainly focuses on the summary, which can be divided into several aspects. Firstly, some scholars discussed the implication of purple in The Color Purple. Secondly, some scholars concentrate the heroine Celie in The Color Purple. There are also feminist views abroad. For example, Susan Willis (1987) analyzed the purple theme from the perspective of black feminism. According to her paper, The Color Purple is consistent with black feminism. The main principle of black feminism is clearly the way to protect black women from attack. Previous studies have been very helpful on this topic. Foreign scholars have done a lot of research on purple itself. At the same time, some scholars have made a comparative study of purple. It should be pointed out that only when all women realize that they are a great and unique individual can they win the real spiritual existence. In summary, the study of purple by foreign scholars is relatively mature, which has certain reference value for the study of this paper. Domestic research on Alice Walker mainly focuses on The Color Purple. CNKI has more than 1500 journal papers and Master's papers on The Color Purple. Since the first article on The Color Purple was published in 1986, the research on The Color Purple has shown a diversified trend. The study of The Color Purple is mainly embodied in the following four aspects: First, to interpret The Color Purple from the perspective of feminism. It holds that feminism is the link that runs through the tradition of modern African-American women's literature. It embodies the ideal state of existence of black feminism, emphasizes the plurality of feminism in different historical backgrounds, and fills in the blank of black feminist literature tradition under the strong "white-male" tradition, Sun(2004)concluded. Secondly, it describes the dominant ideology in The Purple from the perspective of male violence, which prevents men from correctly understanding themselves and their black compatriots, Wu(2005) summarized. Thirdly, from the perspective of ecofeminism, Li(2010) analyses the damage of patriarchal world outlook on nature and women in The Color Purple. Fourthly, Han (2004) summarized the feminism in The Purple from four aspects: anti-sexism, racism, African-centrism and humanism. Among the papers analyze womanism , one aspect is the reason that cause Celie#8217;s awakening. Liang(2018) talks about only true love can help woman create woman. Walker treats the female homosexual as nature and free just as true love. Celie and Shug are friends, sisters, families and lovers. The Color Purple conveys the idea that woman can support and comfort each other not only materially, emotionally and spiritually, but also sexually. Jing(2013) analyzes the reasons that cause Celie#8217;s awakening. The main reason is love. Love in The Color Purple can be divided into two kinds. The first kind is love between Celie and Netti. This kind of love finally give Celie courage to fight. The second kind of love is always between man and woman. However, in this novel, love is between two women: Celie and Shug. Therefore, the essence of love is the awakening of black woman against the black man#8217;s cruelness. Gao (2014) discusses how Celie manages to get rid of the racial and sexual oppressions, and finally successfully grow from a woman who lacks of self-identity to a woman with a complete subjective selfhood consciousness under the influence of sisterhood from Sophia, Shug and Netti. Other aspects including analyzing Celie, her husband and mothers in this novel. Qi Huan(2018) mainly talked about celie#8217;s awakening and the relationship between her and her husband. With the awakening of Celie, her husband gradually realized his faulty, too. In wider perspective, both black male and female finally get coexisted and make progress together. Wan Lili(2009) studied the image of black women in The Color Purple from the perspective of mother#8212;Sophia#8217;s mother and Celie#8217;s mother. They are both the traditional black female image in this novel. Both of them don#8217;t have their own name in this novel, which exactly means black female is not an individual but a part of black male. Yong(2018) devotes to analyze how Celie walk out of the traditional ideology and constructs her gender identity and race identity from the perspective of black feminism. Zeng(2017)mainly explained Alice Walker#8217;s feminism including humanitarianism and ecologism from sexual discrimination and racial discrimination this two aspects.
