1. Introduction 1.1 Background of the research In today#8217;s world, there are more communications between countries. More and more TV programs appear and have become important mediums for cultural communication. As a main part of East Asian culture, Chinese culture has a long history and has its own glamour. As a kind of media, a lot of TV programs which record a magnificent and historical moment about Chinese culture have been put on the screen and satisfy the spiritual and cultural needs of Chinese people. At the same time, these excellent TV programs should also be introduced to the world to make Chinese culture to be known by foreigners. In this case, the subtitle translation of TV programs plays an important role in spreading Chinese culture and promoting cross-cultural communication. However, when it comes to another language audience, it is difficult to present cultural expressions to the target audience perfectly. How to translate the cultural factors contained in the subtitles becomes a hindrance in the process of communication. The cultural translation theory can be used as a theoretical guide for subtitle translation under the circumstances. Cultural translation theory holds that cultural transmission is an important mission of translation. Translation is not the simple transform between two languages, it goes in special cultural environment. Language is not isolated. Every language belongs to a certain culture. It is difficult to separate language and cultural identity. How different people express what they see is determined by how they perceive and interpret and react to reality. 1.2 Purposes of the research The purposes for this research included three levels. First, the most simple and direct, is to systematically classify the cultural information in the TV program ”National Treasure Files”. Second, the thesis generalizes the translation strategies the translators have adopted to translate the cultural information and analyses the translation from the perspective of cultural translation theory. Then it will discuss if cultural translation theory is effective enough to be adopted in the translation of cultural information and how to make the TV programs become an useful way to convey culture. 1.3 Organization of the research This thesis could be divided into five parts. The first chapter served as the general introduction, in which research background, research purposes and the organization of the research were stated. Chapter two was an overview of the literature, including the exposition of culture translation theory and a lot of studies from researchers at home and abroad on this theory. In chapter three, the thesis would focus on the subtitle and the TV program ”National Treasure Files” would be introduced. Chapter four was the analysis of ”National Treasure Files” from the perspective of culture translation theory, including the strategies the translator adopted and the discussion of the wired in translation according to the theory. This thesis ended with the summary of the major findings, the cultural values, and the significance of this research in the subtitle translation. 2. Literature Review 2.1 Culture Translation Theory Susan Bassnett is believed to be the most outstanding figure in the cultural translation theory. Her cultural translation theory can be concluded into four points illustrated clearly in Translation, History and Culture(1990). Firstly, in nature, translation is meant to meet the needs of different cultures and different groups of a certain culture. Thus, translation needs to comply with different principles and norms in different eras on purpose to satisfy these needs. Susan Bassnett claims that in different occasions, different strategies should be adopted, which is quite different from the viewpoints of the traditional translation theorists. Secondly, translation should achieve the functional equivalence in the target language culture rather than merely restrict itself to the description of the source text. Thirdly, translation cannot be treated simply as a process of decoding and recoding. It is more of an activity of communication. Fourthly, as far as translation unit is concerned, it should be the culture rather than the text. A lot of domestic scholars have put forward their own views on the concept of culture translation theory, and exposed how to apply this theory to E-C or C-E translation. Duan Feng (2006) explained that Bassnett#8217;s theory was a great development of the cultural study in transition. This theory combined the internal study and external study of the literary translation and made the target audience understand the culture better. Chen Meng (2017) took an documentary, Mei Ren Yu Ji, as an example for the practice of culture transition theory. She used the concept of culture-loaded words to consider how to keep a balance between conveying the cultural implications fully and keeping the target text concise, which motivates me to use the theory from different points. 2.2 Subtitle Translation Differing from traditional translation, subtitle translation is gradually developed with the rise of film and television works. It is necessary to have a quick sense of vision with fully understanding of thoughts that film and television works want to express. Cheng Wei (2014) put forward that the subtitle should consider the limit of time and space and coordinate the relationship between the text and the non-verbal media like background music or narrators, in order to bring a better emotional experience to the audience. Wang Tianxibei (2018) combined subtitle translation and cultural translation theory with the introduction of some strategies used in translation so as to meet the target language#8217;s expression habits.
