1. introduction 1.1 research background the life of pi, a 3d film, based on a novel of the same name published by jan martel in 2001, was directed by ang lee. the novel not only won the manbuk prize, but was also on the new york times bestseller list for more than a year. because of ang lee#8217;s liking to making films with strong emotions, the investors decided to make the film by him. in the book, lee not only tells a story to the writer; ang lee also tells a story to the audience. in 2013, the film won four awards, including best director and best visual effects, at the 85th academy awards. with bright and gentle tone, soft mysterious music, simple and clear story, the hidden philosophy in the film guide the audience to dig the story behind the meaning. at the end of the film, another version of the shipwreck comes slowly to the prime of the year. the second story about animals may be a fairy tale while it stands for the truth that the pi can#8217;t face the dark side of human nature, and the journey to the sea is as light as an untouchable dream. ang lee and his production team made a big difference between the warm tone and the dark humanity of the film. the film arouse great concern when it was on and became one of the most favorite films at that time. life of pi not only brought the visual appreciation, but also showed us the interpretation of human nature which instinctly makes us have profound understanding of religion and faith. 1.2 need of the study today#8217;s society is full of laissez-faire, hedonism, utilitarianism, individualism,etc.in this environment, the study on humanity is necessary. enlightenment philosophers also have different views on human nature. for example, rationalism holds that human natural lust is a kind of low-level thing, it is the common thing between human beings and animals, and human rationality is superior. in addition, individuals are more cruel than animals from time to time. however, people still can reflect on themselves in order to make themselves believe that the world is still beautiful and an individual is still good. we need to know that rationality and faith is opposite. the former means that individuals believe science and always face up to the reality although the reality brings pain and evil; the later means that people are inclined to think they can accept baptism and the evil can be eliminated. from the study on humanity in this film, i believe that we can see clearly the human nature and make the better choice to confront the evil and trouble. to remember that the choice is up to you, whether you believe that the world is still beautiful or not when an individual see dark side. 1.3. literature review life of pi has arosed great concern since it was on. some do research from the perspective of human nature. zhou hui ling (2009) makes an analysis in the repression and release of human nature in the spiritual axis of ang lee#8217;s films. he thinks that everyone has his own goodness and evil, while which one of the two outweighs the other should be determined by himself. we can find the author#8217;s view that people are changeable relying on changes of environment. zhou wen ping(2013) researches the decline and redemption of human nature in life of pi. she compares different views of human nature paying attention to the negative aspect which explains that people can be cruel if their survival is threatened. although some can be cruel, we need to believe in this word that everyone is good in the end if he wants to be such a person. li ming tao(2013) says life is a wonder of faith in analysis on life of pi. he thinks individuals are able to have wonderful life if they can take advantage of their faith. works cited leane, elizabeth, watt, yvette, freeman, carol. 1.Research Topic By studying The life of Pi, this research wants to point out that humanity is complex because it includes goodness and evil. Life and death can change an individual#8217;s action which is hard to be done in a normal institution. So when in a trouble, an individual may do some incredible things although he knows it#8217;s wrong. How to make a choice is up to the individual. As we all know, escape may mean that we still believe that the world is beautiful. Contrary to escape, facing up to reality means that individuals believe the world also has the cruel side. Whichever side is reasonable, the most important point is that whether we want to show the beautiful side or not. As a saying goes ”In me the tiger sniffs the rose#8217;, despite cruel reality, we can still believe the beautiful side outweighs the dark side. 2.Research Methods To explore how the film wants us to believe the world is still wonderful and people are kinder, the researcher has read the original work and related materials, analyzed the main ideas and spiritual beliefs of the film and the director Ang Lee. Further related materials will be collected, read and analysed.
