While Chinese conventional culture is being well received all over the world, as one of the most magnificent parts of it, Chinese ancient poems attract mass scholars to interpret their beauty, thus making some comments on their different translated versions in the view of diverse theories prevail. However, no matter where the translators are from, the distinctions among different cultural backgrounds still puzzle many people. Comparing with foreign experts, our native scholars attach more attention to analysis on rhetorical devices and the inner ideas than to translating methods while the foreign ones highlight the aesthetics perspective. Hence, this paper contains the analysis of three translated versions about one specific poem,Chun Jiang Hua Yue Ye, based on multiple translating theories, aiming to figure out the most applicable way of interpreting ancient poems.
The purposes of this paper consist of three aspects. The first one is to examine the application of three theories to the transcriptions. As is known to English learners, translation techniques serve for interpreters in order to achieve the two standards, which are composed of faithfulness to the original and intelligibility to the public. By exploring how three translators use those techniques flexibly under the guidance of multiple theories, we can learn from them about their translation methods on combining theories with practical skills, which are greatly beneficial for our translation learning.
In addition, that three versions differ from each other contributes to our study on finding better suitable theories for Chinese ancient poems translating. Owing to the special features of this style, it is necessary to seek an exclusive way of interpreting. As a result, researching for the differences among three versions, especially for various expressions on the same lines, is beneficial for judging better theories to realize perfect ancient poems’ translation. In a word, what I have done in this paper is to select the essence and discard its ‘dross’ by standing on the shoulders of the giants. Certainly, all of these judgement is in private and needs more comments and guidance.
The last but not least, this paper aims to trace the connection between translation techniques and diverse theories in ancient poems interpreting so that we can put it as a reference to solving the untranslatable or inarticulate expressions caused by cultural diversity. Consequently, the inner beauty of Chinese ancients poems can be displayed faithfully and smoothly, which heralds the prosperity of Chinese traditional culture around the world.
In this paper, diversified theories are used to demonstrate the differences among three versions, which provides more comprehensive translation perspectives than single theory application. What the majority of papers focus on is the content of this poem or only one version, while this paper deals with the usage of translation techniques based on multiple theories in the realm of translation. We may divine the whole from a part in Chinese ancient poems translation and refine our own skills, accounting for the results of this paper. It means one step closer to Chinese conventional culture promoting.
{title}2. 研究的基本内容与方案
{title}This paper explores the differences among three English versions of a Chinese ancient poem, Chun Jiang Hua Yue Ye, translated by three profound scholars based on three translation theories, which consists of Skopos theory, the theory of Dynamic Equivalence, and the theory of Eco-Translatology. The three experts are Charles Budd, W.J.B Fletcher, and Xu Yuanchong respectively, who are distinguished in literature or linguistic realm. In this paper, four questions will be taken into consideration, which are how the the three theories are applied to the poem, why they use translation techniques efficiently, what the contrasts among translators’ environment impacts on their interpreting, and whether the equivalence between the purpose and the effect realizes in three versions. In the way of comparison among them, consultation with supervisors, and reference to the library and the Internet, the answers to those questions will spontaneously turn out. The answers are the key to accomplishing purposes, which facilitate our ancient poems translation and even contribute to carrying forward Chinese traditional culture. What’s more, a relatively better theory can be found which is the fittest to ancient poems translation by comparison and analysis, thus making our translation efficiently and systematically.
