As the first black woman to win the NobelPrize in Literature, Tony Morrison in her work tells that the protagonist, ablack girl Pecora's self-value is gradually distorted in the black and whitedouble cultural conflict. This novel embodies that the subjective consciousnessof black women is caught in self-doubt and self-contradictory. Pulitzer Prizewinner Alice Walker's novel The Colour Purple describes the transformation andgrowth process of a black woman named Celie bound by old ideas, fullydemonstrating the political situation and living conditions of black women whoare deeply oppressed by gender and ethnicity, and the rebellion against thisdouble oppression and the desire and pursuit of perfection. This fully reflectsthe beginning of the growth of the black women subjective consciousness. KathrynStockett's novel The Help tells a revolution story of two black maids, Aibileenand Minny, in Mississippi in 1962 and a white college graduate. At a time whenethnic conflicts were one after another, two black maids dared to discussidentity and differences in writing, albeit in an anonymous form, but it was animportant step in establishing subjective consciousness and self-identity.
Thesethree novels created by three different women writers who have differentethnic identity have been explored from many perspectives. When it comes to thesubjective consciousness of black women, domestic and foreign scholars mainlystudy the two black female writers which are Toni Morrison and Alice Walker andtheir respective works. Toni Morrison's three novels The Bluest Eyes, Sula andBeloved are a complete chain that embodies the process of black women'ssubjective consciousness from loss to awakening and finally to find theirself-identity(冯肖潇,2017).However, most of the studies dig into one author's one novel and interpret itin an unique way. By applying Lacan's Mirror Theory, the process of theheroine's self-identity construction in the novel The Colour Purple is analysedfrom the view of reference and reflection to the "other"(王春,胡其林,2017). From theperspective of female writing, the themes of female care, human thinking, gender identity, historical consciousness and other creative methods embodiedin the Tone Morrison's works are explained in detail to incarnate thehumanistic care(李韶丽,2011). As for The Colour Purple, currently, the research of critics mainlyfocuses on the ideological themes such as feminism and racial discrimination. It describes the persecution and negative influence of religion on thecharacters and naturally unifies race, gender and religious belief, telling thereader only from nature to find god, from the harmonious relationship betweenpeople to find spiritual strength(左依娇,吕瑛,2015). Besides, homosexual relationship inthis novel is a strong indictment of the patriarchal system destroying women'sbody and mind, and it is also the channel for the protagonist toself-awakening(康茂华,滕苹凤,2008). Yet, little attention was paid to the writing of the epistolaryform itself(杨晓,2008).Compared with the former novels, The Help is very young, and it is not createduntil 2009. Therefore, the exploration on it is not too much and mainly focuseson the analysis of characters.
Theinnovation part of the paper is that it sees the development, the loss ofPecora's subjective consciousness to the awakening of Celie, to the last twoblack maids's self identity, a process of the continuous maturity of the blackwomen subject consciousness in the society. Moreover, the paper analyses thereasons behind the three different stages and gives the solutions. The paperaims at emphasizing that although subject consciousness is labeled with the word"subject", it actually has a very deep social attribute. What wethink is influenced by different cultures and people with various identities inthe social environment. In addition, the awakening and growth of contemporarywomen's subject consciousness mainly focuses on the female intellectuals. Thisgroup of knowledge women can be more clearly aware of their own characteristicsas women and social position, and the pursuit of their own independentdevelopment as a person. Due to these great works finished by the great writerswho have devoted their most of life to fight for women, the female subjectconsciousness whose awakening is the core of many women's problems grows a lot onthe whole. But still, the whole society needs to do more. No man is an island, the famous John Donne poem reads.
