The study of network language and internet buzzwords began in the early 20th century. In just ten years, the dictionary and monographs on the study of online languages were published one after another. The research on internet buzzwords is less than that of online languages, but it has also become a hot spot for scholars in recent years. The emergence and development of internet buzzwords in China is only a matter of decades, and the study of internet buzzwords began in the late 1990s. At present, the perspectives of online popular language research in Chinese linguistics mainly focus on the definition of network buzzwords, the reasons for the formation of internet buzzwords, the social and cultural factorsas well as psychological factors behind internet buzzwords. Some scholars also learn from cognitive linguistics and models. Some scholars also discuss from the perspective of cognitive linguistics and memetics. With the rapid development of the Internet, the connotation and extension of the network buzzwords are constantly expanding and extending. The existing researches can not fully explain the new phenomena appearing in the network buzzwords.
Eco-linguistics, or ecological linguistics, emerged in the 1990s as a new paradigm of linguistic research, widening sociolinguistics to take into account not only the social context in which language is embedded, but also the ecological context. Eco-linguistics was regarded as a metaphor by Haugen in a speech given in August, 1972. According to Haugen (1972:325), the linguists should pay much attention to the interrelationship between the language in the minds of language users and the language in language ecosystem when studying ecology linguistics. As a new paradigm of scientific research, the ecological language concept provides a new way of thinking and research methods of scientific understanding.
This paper draws on the ecological point of view, and takes the buzzwords of the Internet in recent years as the corpus, and analyses the Chinese internet buzzwords from the ecological perspective. The article draws on the basic theories of ecology such as the idea of diversity, dynamics, and ecological environment to study online buzzwords, and combines official attitudes to explore some changes in the ecological environment of online buzzwords. As the most active part of the network language, online buzzwords are characterized by high frequency. Some popular online buzzwords have quietly stepped out of the network and went to daily life and even news reports. As an indispensable part of the language ecosystem, network buzzwords has great significance. Eco-linguistics believes that the diversity of language is the most important factor in maintaining ecological balance. The same is true for online language. Nowadays, the number of the articles that advocates loose language environment is also increasing. In the face of the ever-changing and unpredictable online buzzwords, from the perspective of eco-linguistics, on the one hand, we need to screen and choose the online buzzwords; On the other hand, it is also necessary to maintain a optimistic attitude towards it, giving enough time and space for new online buzzwords to grow or die in a more relaxed network ecosystem. In short, we must establish an ecological language concept to promote the sustainable development of online buzzwords and create a healthy and harmonious network environment.
