With the rapid development ofeconomy, China has witnessed great changes in recent years. We have made majorachievements in economic development and major breakthroughs in deepeningreform. China has improved its international status and made new contributionsto global peace and development. Thus more and more people want to getacquainted with principles and policies of our government. And the governmentreport can provide a window for those people.

The report on the work of government is putforward annually in two sessions (National People’s Congress and the ChinesePeople’s Political Consultative Conference). It includes a review of our workover the past years and the overall requirements and policy direction foreconomic and social development in the future. It also carries lots ofinformation on politics, economy, culture, education, diplomacy and nationaldefense, all of which are concerned with people’s life. In this way, people ofall walks of life attach great importance to the report.

However, with the process of globalization,an increasing number of Chinese study or work overseas and mounting foreignerscome to China to seek business opportunities. Meanwhile, with the advance ofReform and Opening-up, more and more countries hope to build cooperation withChina. So the English version of the government report is necessary for them tolearn about China.

Given that it is an official document representingthe image of China and taking responsibilities to introduce major principlesand policies, great attention should be paid to the English translation of thereport. If translated inappropriately, it may lead to serious misunderstandingsor even diplomatic disputes.

Currently, researches of the report havebeen made on words, sentences and textual cohesion, such as the translation ofChinese four-character idiom, the language characteristics, lexicalcollocations and translation methods. Hu Haibao writes an article ’ACorpus-based Study of the linguistic Features and Textual Effect of the Englishtranslation of the Government Work Report. ’ And Wang xuan writes the paper ’Aresearch on the C-E Translation of the GWRs Based on Stylistic Analysis’ Papersabout the English version of the report have been viewed and cited numeroustimes. As for the long sentences translation, more articles are concerned withtranslation of long sentences in English rather than Chinese. For example, WuDeyu writes the article ‘Translation of Long Sentences from English intoChinese Sense Groups as Units’. So it is meaningful to research on thetranslation of long sentences in Chinese Government report.

The accuracy of long sentences translation isrelated to the smoothness of the version. Most of the time, those sentences aredifficult to deal with because of their complex structures and the hugedifferences between these two languages. Only when they are well translated canwe have a clear idea of the whole article. If not, misunderstanding about themeaning or structure may be caused. Long sentence translation can also help ussee the characteristics of English and Chinese and their expression habits. Thusit can make our translation more fluent and idiomatic.

Last but not least, the translation of longsentences in Chinese Government Work Report is not studied carefully. Principlesand methods for the translation of these long sentences need to be mainlyemphasized.

2. 研究的基本内容与方案

This paper will pick out the Chinese longsentences in the Government Work Report of 2019 and analyze their structures.

By contrast with those sentences in thereport of official English version, differences between Chinese and Englishlike structures and conjunctions will be found. Then the author will classifythese sentences as different types and try to find proper methods to deal with eachtype of them.

It aims to delve into translation methodsand provide advice on the translation of long Chinese sentences, especiallythose in political government document. It will also attract people's attentionon the translation of long Chinese sentences and improve the translationquality of public political material so as to help foreigner and overseasChinese to have a more accurate idea of our government policies. In this way, Chinacan show its culture or economy to the world and improve its internationalinfluence.
