Analysis of Artistry in Poetry Translation

----with Paradise Lost as an Example

Introduction

Poetry, which contains the incessant pursuit of beauty, is a grand invention created by human kind. It#8217;s extensively acknowledged that poetry embodies a kind of artistry. In this thesis, studying the importance of artistry in literature translation, especially in poetry#8217;s translation, is the main topic. And Paradise Lost is taken as an example and several versions of its translation is discoursed there. This thesis is fictitious research paper in literature area of translation. It indicates how critical and useful the artistry is in translation and helps scholars get more supportive evidences on study of artistry#8217;s translation in the future.

The characters#8217; monologue in drama expresses his or her emotions and thoughts via verses. Therefore poetry possesses great readability and artistry and has vast contribution to human#8217;s art. The translation of western poetry into Chinese should conserve the artistry that the original poetry has.

Paradise Lost is based on the biblical legend of the Adam and Eve, and involves God and his eternal adversary, Satan in its plot. As we all know, bible is a well-known classic in worldwide. The stories in it are not only simple show of divine issues but the art of imagination in ancient time. The single story in it can be extended to an intact play. Lots of details can be added into it. Definitely, Paradise Lost is such a creation. The pure narration cannot fulfill the request of artistry and holy illusion. John Milton adopted the style of poetry to reproduce it. So when translators are going to translate Paradise Lost, the recreation of its artistry must be a critical procedure.
