A Tentative Exploration of the Primary School Students’ English Teaching and Learning Reform – a Case Study of Nanjing Xue’ersi 小学生英语教学改革初探—以南京学而思英语为例文献综述

Introduction English is one of the ”Three Main Subjects” in the Teaching, pupils are at the primary stage of English studying. As the common language in the world,English is being taught from the primary school.English is not only the fundamental form of language but also has the cultural connotation. Our education on English course is based on these two aspects.But the teaching in English is only focus on former one from the current situation of primary school students#8217; study,they only learn how to study this language rather than the real meaning behind this language.If we want to reflect on the education in the primary school,we must seriously look into the situation in the English teaching and analyse the fundamental reason. In English teaching and according to the teaching requirements of new course standard, it will improve pupils#8217; ability to use English by stimulating their strong interests and developing good habits in studying English when they are young. And it is of great importance for pupils#8217; comprehensive development to advocate the independent,open and exploratory teaching method. Everyone does not deny that it is necessary to perform the teaching and learning reform of English. Literature Review Dou Xingzhen is a lecturer of Hei Longjiang Institute of Education. In his essay Stimulate Interest and Let the ”Main” Move(2002),he expresses his point of view about what should teachers do to stimulate pupils#8217; interest in English classroom teaching.He thinks that interest is the best teacher,teachers should use scientific method to make the English class lively and interesting.They not only should teach them knowledge but also teach them how to learn effectively.He tries to stimulate students#8217; interests from the following aspects:1.In the course of teaching,teachers should try to pay attention on each student, find their shining point and give them more encouragement and praises. 2.Using modernized teaching method is necessary,teachers can let students watch English cartoons to improve their listening and speaking and give them more chances to speak and imitate the idiomatic English in the English class. Teachers can also use modernized teaching methods such as playing videos,English songs, using projection and ect..to encourage students to be a member of them. 3.Bring games into class to make the class lively.Students like playing games and they will master this language imperceptibly.4.Work in groups.Through teachers#8217; constant encouragement and team spirit, those students who do not want to speak in the class can also speak out bravely.I think he is right,students like vivid class rather than rigid ones.In English teaching,we should provide students with more chances to practise. In his another article named ”Stimulate students#8217; learning interest,cultivate students#8217; good learning habits”. he raises some issues which should be paid more attention to in the situational English teaching and the development of good learning habits.When setting the ”situations”,teachers should think about the students#8217; psychological and physiological characteristics.He also thinks teachers can bring some objects to the classroom,for example if you want to teach students a word ”apple”,you should better take a real apple,then when students learn the word ”apple”,they will think about the fruit apple and vice versa.In the aspect of developing a good learning habit,he thinks a good learning habit is a foundation for the future English studying.In my opinion,in the English teaching,it is better to give students a situation to understand a word or a phrase,this ”situation”can be shown in the form of gesture,expression,body language,a story or a practical performance between students.For some difficult new words,teachers can do the actions to let students guess the meaning of the word, then let them perform and speak the word or make a sentence with this new word.As the learning habit,I think teachers can set a good example firstly.For example,if students are poor at speaking,thus teachers should better create a good English environment and give them more chances to speak in the class.After class,teachers also can chat with them in English actively. Tan Qingxiang is an English specialist in Yu Hu District.In her work The exertion of ”Ask and Answer” in the primary school English teaching (2000),she raises two questions about what are the purposes of ”Ask and answer” and how to ask and answer.She classifies the ”Ask and answer” into two,one is about knowledge which aims to help students review knowledge by the ways of recalling and reciting and another is about communication which aims to examine students#8217; ability of understanding and applying what the students have learnt.A successful ask and answer should arouse students#8217; thinking and give them time to think and answer.I think we also need to enhance students#8217; consciousness to ask questions and promote the contact between teachers and students ,students and students. Wu Zheng#8217;e is a teacher in Yun He District,Cang Zhou City primary school.In her Analysis on the Function of Games in English Teaching(2000),she thinks that playing games properly in the class is necessary.Games are in favor of stimulating students#8217; interest,it also caters to the children#8217;s natural instincts.They are curious about new things,and children are born to be lively.When we learn ”cat” and ”dog”, teachers can let students imitate their sounds firstly and then make a jingle to remember words like” cat,猫 ,喵、喵、喵 ;dog,狗 ,汪、汪、汪。

Games can also train students#8217; ability of thinking and creating.Teachers can get the feedback through the games.Games are not only make the class vivid,but the most important thing is to complete the teaching goal.Students study in a happy environment so that it reduces the study burden. At the same time,teachers can find each student#8217;s merits and shortcomings. Jeremy Harmer is a writer,presenter,teacher and trainer in the field of English Language Teaching(ELT). In his book”How to Teach English(2000),the titles in every chapter are started with ”how”.He thinks the traditional teaching focuses on teaching rather than the interaction with students.A good English teacher should not only be proficient in his professional knowledge and basic teaching principle but also they need to care about students and deal with the relationship with students.In another aspect,teachers should focus more on students#8217; study and design different teaching methods according to students#8217; different comprehensive ability. In the third chapter,Harmer describes how to organize teaching and learning from the aspect of clothing,voice and ect.to the arrangement of seats and group work.I learn from it that in the process of interacting with students,the standing posture,eye contact,gesture and the distance between students can also affect students#8217; psychology.As the teachers#8217; voice,I think firstly it must assure that everybody can hear,but the most important thing is that the voice needs to be changeable so that students will not feel bored and sleepy.The fourth chapter is the most meaningful chapter,he puts forward a new teaching idea called ESA:Engage,Study,Activate.Engage means teachers should use different teaching methods to stimulate students#8217; interest. Study means to teach knowledge that students have to learn. Activate means to activate the knowledge they have learnt to solve practical problems.Actually activate is the final goal of study,it will be the effective study if students can apply what they have learnt in a flexible way. Yang Ling is a teacher in Gao Xing Experimental Primary School,in her article named ”The Reformation and Innovation in Primary English Teaching”(2002),she mentioned that with the great development of science and technology,the traditional teaching mode is facing a big challenge.According to the survey,most of students do not like study. Because in the traditional class,teachers aim at helping students get high marks,thus they ignore the students#8217; interest in English.In order to change this situation,reformation and innovation are indispensable.The best way is to let students themselves explore the knowledge and get information.She also uses the situational teaching method to relate the words and sentences with the situation,then let students perform to stimulate their interest and help them remember new words in a short time.As far as I concerned, this kind of new teaching not only breakthrough the difficulties in teaching and accomplish the teaching task but also make students experience the innovation. Methodology I will write my essay from the following aspects:first I will introduce the current situation in the primary school English class; second,the importance of the reform of English teaching;third,the problems of the traditional class;fourth,what should teachers do in English classroom teaching.The last one is how to make the best use of the class time to study.
