Analysis on Translation of Popular English Internet-neologism in Terms of Word-formation

1 Introduction

The World Wide Web becomes a new type of English media now after the Internet has been invented. That means English is the most widely used language on the internet now. As the famous linguist David Crystal mentioned in his work Language and Internet, the statistics indicated that more than 70% of the internet users all arounded the globe are from English-speaking countries(David Crystal, 2001). These countries choose English as their official languages or their second language, so they use English mainly in their daily communication. Besides, approximately half of netizens are from the main English-speaking countries like the USA, the UK, or Australia, and other internet users are from those countries which use English as the second language or foreign language. English is the most widely used language on internet for netizens, and some new words such as “netlish” or “weblish” are created to describe this new type of language since this kind of language was invented and used only on the internet. The two words have the same suffix “lish”, which is derived from the word “English”.

The emergence of the internet words is growing fast in the last two decades, since Internet, the completely new form of media, is developing fast. Some people believe that the Internet neologism belongs to a new type of language now because the Internet neologism has many different characteristics form the traditional english words. The word “internet neologisms” has two meanings, the general one and the special one. In the general meaning, there are three kinds of internet neologisms: network technique language, cyber-culture language, and chat-language. In the special meaning, the internet neologism means the words used in the online communicating. The network technique language and cyber-culture language has showed that the new things, new phenomena on the internet, and they are called cyber jargon. However, the Internet neologism has a broader meaning; it can be used not only in the online chatting, online forums or E-mails, but also in our daily lives. These new words or expressions (Internet neologisms) have new meanings and they can be used to express some conceptions more exactly in our daily life. The unique word formation of these words inspired many people to use them in their language.

There are various definitions given by the researchers or articles about Internet neologism. As David Crystal expressed in his book, Internet neologism is something that can be defined in the following way,

“Network word is a kind of language showing features that are distinctive of the internet, and be faced with in email, chat groups, virtual worlds and World Wide Web, is something no longer restricted to the character as a medium, which is electronic global and interactive.” (David Crystal, 2001)

As a language is applied to the internet, there are many different ways to explain Internet neologisms.

Internet slang(or cyber-slang, chat speak, Internet shorthand, net speak) refers to all kinds of slang languages used by different online communities. It is hard to definite the concept of the internet neologisms precisely. However, it can be regarded as a kind of slang that have been popularized and coined by the modern netizens.
