nathaniel hawthorne plays an inestimable role in the literary world, he is lauded as one of the most influential romanticists in the 19^th century, as well as the pioneer of psychological novel in american romanticism. he was born in a declining family with long puritan tradition, thus shaping him into a writer whose mind is full of contradictions, on one hand, he criticized religious fanaticism and church hypocrisy, while on the other hand, he was fettered by the tradition and recognized the world with calvinistic concept of good and evil.

christian religious thoughts and the bible have profound impact on europe's spiritual world. most writers are unconsciously influenced by the bible, which is with no exception to hawthorne,as a descendant of puritan tradition, he always utilize puritan doctrine to treasure his literary works. a good case in point is the symbolism masterpiece, the scarlet letter, revealing his strong bible complex between the lines with the writing technique of archetypal criticism. it is worth mentioning that the ingenious use of biblical archetypes and images makes the scarlet letter an immortal work. thus the interpretation of the scarlet letter exerting great significance on the following two aspects: first, the archetypal analysis of work is the key for readers to have in-depth understanding of this novel; second, the "displacement"of biblical archetypes in the work enriches the cultural connotation and enhance the artistic appeal of the novel.

based on the fact, this paper is designed to specify and detail the biblical archetypes reflected in the thesis from the prospective of its main characters and structure, which shows readers a new and comprehensive view to understand the scarlet letter. and the thesis contains the following four chapters.
