A rose for Emily is a masterpiece of Faulkner's short stories and is of great significance for researching ,analyzed by many scholars from different angles .For example, Xu Jianxiang and Liu Fuqin propose that due to its complex and original narration-- “she” is in “our” horizon--its meaning is colorful and difficulty. They indicated that Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is unique in narrative techniques, combining first-person narrative and third-person narrative features. Meanwhile, they consider that in the choice of time, the author did not follow the traditional chronological narrative, only selected several points related to the protagonist Emily and used the flashback method to retrospectively describe Emily's life. Besides,Chang Haige prefer to study this novel from the perspective of a stylistic analysis of the narrative mode. He put forward that in A Rose for Emily, Faulkner applies the plural form of first person point of view. He indicated that the first person plural form “we” implies that narrator is one of the town’s people who lives together with Emily in the town.By using “we”, the narrator can attribute what might be his or her own thoughts and opinions to all of the town people, turning private ideas into commonly held beliefs.

It is well known that the pursuit of symbolism in the short story of "The Rose for Emily" is a major feature of Faulkner's art writing techniques. And Wang Xiaohong analyzes the inner feelings of the three masters in the work and the corresponding symbolic meanings through the use of the author's artistic writing techniques for the mysterious depiction of the characters. She emphasized that Faulkner did not chronically deal with this magnificent historical picture, but focused on the three main characters (Emily, Emily's father, Homer) by means of it mysterious description. At the same time, Yuan Minmin analyze the symbolic connotation of the tragic character of Emily in “ A Rose for Emily” to reflect the destruction of the aristocratic class in the south and the collapse of morality of the fair lady. At the same time, Shao Junduan and Yuan chunou analyzed the gothic characteristics in A Rose for Emily on several aspects: the theme, plot structure and narrative way,the character and description of the environment.They emphasized the old tradition and system in southern America history which were related to Puritanism and the main character’s inner world by depicting the tragedy of Emily in gothic style.

In the process of reviewing the materials, I found that few foreign scholars studied the novel. A scholar who named Tuncay Tezcan I have seen analyzes this novel from the perspective of stylistics and translation.

But the research from the perspective of humanism and feminism is not much, this essay will start with humanism and take the United States after the war of the social vicissitude as the background to analyse the causes of Emily's tragic life who represents the declining aristocracy and the southern tradition, reflecting the social phenomena and characteristics of America at that time. In particular, I will further analyze the implications of this topic --the symbolic meaning of the “rose” and who presents the rose to Emily. Meanwhile ,the essay will analyze the reasons why the heroine is a tragedy in the end from the perspective of feminism.

This essay start with feminism and humanism, taking the United States after the war of the social vicissitude as the background to analyze the symbolic meaning of the “rose” and the causes of Emily's tragic life who represents the declining aristocracy and the southern tradition, reflecting the social phenomena and characteristics of America at that time. It can be divided into several parts,the first part introduces the background and significance of the topic. And then the essay will briefly introduce the influence of the author and the novel; the second part is to have an interpretation of the symbolic meaning of the novel's topic, the concealed chronological order, the changing narrative angle, and the symbolic meaning of "rose" "time" and the motivation of Miss Emily to kill her lover. And summarize the analysis and criticism of the novel. Finally, this essay will put forward personal opinions on these literary reviews and analyze the novels.

The goal of this paper is to analyze the causes of Emily's tragic life as comprehensively as possible, especially from the perspective of feminism and humanism and the background of the times at that time.

In order to pursue the comprehensiveness of essay, the literature research method will be utilized in order to find more detailed and profound information concerning the analyze the role of Emily and the meaning of “rose”.
